OUR HISTORY

Acado Grenada, formerly Independence Agencies Limited was founded in 1973 by Cecil K. Sylvester with two assistants.
The first office was located in a small building on Tyrrell Street where we operated from an upstairs office with a storeroom on the downstairs. The main source of business at the time was from a sales van operated by one of the assistants.

In 1975 the company moved to Scott Street in a slightly bigger office on the second floor in another location with a salesroom on the ground floor, at this time the Staff had grown to eight due to the addition of purchasing products locally from Distributors, The Company  started to import some products, having procured agencies for British American Tobacco, Dano Powdered Milk from Denmark, Alaska Condensed and Evaporated milk from Holland, canned and pickled meats from Holland plus importing from, Trinidad and Barbados products which were manufactured there.

In 1981, the Company again moved to another location on Young Street with more office and storage space and a staff of fifteen and two Sales Vans which operated in the country district, by this time the company secured additional agencies with Suppliers in Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A., Canada, Guyana, Colombia and a few European countries.

The Company was operating as Commission Agents, Manufacturers Representatives, Distributors and Wholesalers. Eventually these premises had become inadequate for the operations and in 1988, the Company purchased a building which was originally used as a cinema on The Carenage, St. George’s the finances of the company enabled them to purchase the property with their own cash. The property was renovated to suit the operations and again without having to approach any lending facility. The company operated in that location for 16 years before the building was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004

In 1995 the company bought a grocery store in Grand Anse, St. George’s which was renovated and expanded and now operates as C.K.’s Super-Valu.

In 1996, the company bought a lot of land in Grand Anse, St. George’s on which the Warehouse was built  six years later, due to the fact that the warehouse facilities on The Carenage, St. George’s had become too small for warehousing purposes.

In 2002, Goddard Enterprises Limited (GEL) approached the company with an interest to purchased 100% of its assets. However after having numerous discussions with GEL, in 2003 the directors decided to sell 51% of the company’s assets to GEL.

After the hurricane, the company moved temporary offices to upstairs C. K.’s Super-Valu.

In 2007 the office moved to the Warehouse facilities at Grand Anse, St. George’s where they added a three storey building to accommodate the main offices.

Independence Agencies has since grown and now has a staff complement of 110 persons. The company is partly owned by Agostini Group in Trinidad and Tobago, and is a member of the Caribbean Distribution Partners Limited, CDP Limited.
